she - Pioneer

she is the brainchild of chiptune composer Pjat Lain. Chiptune is very frequent in the use of "gameboys" as instruments to emit music with a "video game" sound. With this album, the songs almost seem to be coming from an NES game.

Teenage Bottlerocket - Total

A pop punk band that leans more to punk rock that pop. For fans of a straight punk Less Than Jake. Overall just a very fun band to listen to.

Circle Takes the Square - As the Roots Undo

Similar to the below entry, this is a very progressive/experimental album. There are very many different styles of music incorporated into this album. It has the chaos of powerviolence, calm build-up of post-rock and the breakdowns of hardcore. The lyrics are poetically cryptic and are shouted back and forth as well as simultaneously by the various members of the band. Lyrics are in the tracks and if you download the skramz pack, you'll notice "Same Shade as Concrete" is from this album.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

A legendary album. Anyone who's a prog rock fan (or older rock fan) will immediately know this album. This album is a main pillar of influence for a lot of modern prog/experimental music today. Beautiful lyrics and amazing instrumentals that are tied together through a whimsical theme.

Curren$y - Pilot Talk

A rap album from last year. I particularly love the audio samples on this album, as well as Curren$y's lyrics and flow.

The Antlers - Hospice

My favorite indie rock album of 2009. The sound on this album is very effective in being soft and sad without becoming too bland or contrived. I took the liberty to add .txts of the lyrics for each song so you can vicariously listen to it. While there are some catchy/poppy songs, this isn't really an album suitable for background music.

Trap Them - Darker Handcraft

An amazing new album. A combination of metalcore, grind and crust, which forms a very dark and chaotic sounding masterpiece. Every song seems to explode with intensity. Definitely could compete for album of the year.

Skramz

This has been a long time coming. I got into screamo/skramz in junior year of high school. I immediately loved it because I felt it was the most sincere music I've listened to. This is the only genre of music I think could beat out my other loved genre (which is metal) in listens. The list I made has 35 bands and they also have their own style, which borrows from other genres like powerviolence, post-rock and sludge. I included a text file which since typing it up I've forgotten what I put in it, probably says that each song has the album art from the album the song is taken from. Also, I tried finding most of the lyrics for the songs and made little descriptions of the band/album/song in each songs comment section. If you like this, find the albums yourself and/or buy them. Enjoy! ~ Bill

Here's another link to great brief summary/history of screamo/emo, their emotional hardcore punk roots and different waves that shaped the sound.

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is one multi-talented person. He's a stand up comedian, leader of a comedy sketch crew, wrote for The Daily Show and 30 Rock, currently has a role in NBC's Community as Troy, and is one sick rapper. Childish Gambino has 7 albums out in a short term of 3 years. I'm sharing my top 3 albums below. Worth the downloads for any hip-hop/rap fan!

Childish Gambino - EP (2011)

Childish Gambino - Culdesac (2010)

Childish Gambino - I Am Just a Rapper (2010)

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Legendary album. More than likely you've seen the album artwork plastered everywhere. This album is a heavy influence for a lot of modern music. One of the many high points for the post-punk movement.

Johnny Hobo and The Freight Trains - ...is Dead!

Johnny Hobo and The Freight Trains was a folk punk group fronted by Pat the Bunny (who also created Wingnut Dishwasher's Union). Most of the lyrics deal with Pat's belief in anarchism. His raw vocals and quick strumming capture his youthful passion.

The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic

An Oregon power pop band with a tragically cut short lifespan. Very reminiscent of 60's/70's pop rock, but with less solos and more riffs.

The Girls - Yes No Yes No Yes No

The Girls are a new wave/power pop group from Seattle, WA. The upbeat and energetic sound is hard not to like. These guys are just plain fun!

Ryan's Hope - Apocalypse in Increments

An amazing Chicago punk band. Very unique band that has uplifting, if not inspirational, lyrics with intricate guitar work. Just a very fun band to listen to. Lyrics are also included.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞

A cornerstone band in the post-rock genre. Hailing from Montreal, GY!BE revolutionized the post-rock sound, starting off another unique wave. There are only three songs on this album, but they're sectioned off into different parts. Like other post-rock bands, the songs feature long drawn out crescendos, but with a  unique "The world is ending." kind of feel.

Arab on Radar - Rough Day at the Orifice

Arab on Radar is a noise rock band from Rhode Island.  Their shows consisted of nudity and smashing things, which resulted in them getting ran out of venues regularly. They're apart of Three One G records, so you know they're unique and worth a good listen!

Arab on Radar - Rough Day at the Orifice

Limp Wrist - Complete Discography

Limp Wrist is an American hardcore punk band. Their style has also been dubbed 'queercore', since their lyrics are based upon the LGBT lifestyle.

"We put the 'core' back in 'Queercore'!"

Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader

A very fun and silly midwest emo band from Philly. Algernon is noted for using plenty of angular guitars and sloppy singing. Something which midwest emo is known for. Lyrics included! :D

Repulsion - Horrified

A classic grindcore/death metal album from stick-in-the-mud Flint, MI. Only kidding. Horrified has the speed and intensity of grind while capturing the aggressive riffs and morbid themes of death metal.

Apathetic Ronald McDonald / Final Draft

This is one of my favorite splits with two kick-ass powerviolence bands, Apathetic Ronald McDonald (AxRxMx) and Final Draft. A must have for any powerviolence fan!
